Marcus Ehning - The German You Will Never Forget

Marcus Ehning - The German You Will Never Forget

Olympic Champion complains about the lack of sponsorship in equestrian world

Personal motto of this mythic hero in German show jumping is: never give up

GoldenHorse News Tour: In the show jumping world, only very few have come close enough in comparison with this sophisticated yet humble gentleman known now as the "German Gun". He is one of the global show jumping phenomenons that experts and specialists in this course claim Marcus Ehning is 50 years ahead equestrian history of Germany.
Marcus Ehning is not just the hat trick- winner of the World Cup title on three very different mounts, A team Olympic Gold Medal winner in 2000. Marcus finished 1st with his team at the World Championships in Lexington and 1st individually at the World Cup final in Geneva in 2010. In 2011 he came 5th at the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in Valkenswaard and in 2012 he was 2nd at the CSI5* Grand Prix in Basel.
Personal motto of this mythic hero in German show jumping is:  ‘never give up’

Marcus Ehning (born April 19, 1974 in Südlohn, North Rhine-Westphalia), His parents Hilde Ehning (Teacher) and Richard Ehning (Livestock merchant) have the greatest influence in his personal and career life. Marcus and his four sisters and brothers (Kerstin, Karina, Cornelia, Johannes- Johannes is also a show jumper) knew the horse from the childhood and at the age of seven, he took riding lessons in the riding club of Borken. Also, he continued to academic educations in whole-sale and foreign trade management. In these years he is also active in horse business and horse training. Marcus married to Nadia Ehning in 2009 and now they have two children, Yula Ekaterina (2009) and Davy Andreas (2011). Marcus is riding in ZRFV Team in Borken of Germany. His hobby is football and in his spare time, Marcus plays soccer with his brother Johannes. Although this rider gentleman is a hero and a sample for many riders in the entire world, but his hero and idol is German show jumper Ludger Beerbaum.
His favorite and most successful horse has been “For Pleasure” and always he says that this horse is very important for him. His personal motto is: ‘never give up’. Now Marcus lives in Borken of Germany in his personal apartment and near of his family and stables.
Sandro Boy, Sabrina, Plot Blue, Copin van de Broy, LeConte, and Cornado belong to Marcus’ top level horses and also Nolte"s Küchengirl who was introduced to Grand Prix jumping by his brother Johannes.
Marcus started riding at the age of seven. He took riding lessons, along with his sister, Kerstin, in the riding club of Borken. Some videos still exist in the Ehning archives of Marcus’ first beginner’s shows (E- and A-classes) on Ponies and adult horses.
Although not every ride was successful, Marcus was very ambitious from the beginning. As a result, he once received a special award for completing a course—even though in the process he had fallen off the horse three times! Marcus quickly learned how to adjust to different horses and his father Richard made sure that he had suitable horses.
All of the Ehning children learned how to ride on the Pony “Narmit”, who brought Marcus safely to success. “Lord,” Marcus’ first adult horse, gave him the confidence to compete in his first low and medium level shows (L- and M classes). Marcus then rode “Metaxa,” a horse very dear to him but also for sale. When she was as good as sold, however, Marcus lit a candle for her every evening and spent his time sitting next to her in the stable. Marcus’ father got the message and cancelled the deal.
He says: "At home we always had horses around and therefore it was easier to take up the sport. Show jumping is the most interesting part of equestrian sports, because you are able to ride quickly.
Another pony called “Starlight” was responsible for Marcus’ first international success and helped him win the Gold Medal in the European Championships in both 1990/91. With “Starlight” and “Queen” he triumphed in several medium level shows (M-classes). He finally won the German Championships in 1991 with his third pony “Bright Ruby.”
Marcus competed his first high level show (S-class) with “Cygan.” He finished the class with two rails down. At the age of sixteen, Marcus changed from riding ponies to adult horses. During this time “Orchidee“, “Opium“and “Talan“were his most important horses. With these three horses, Marcus won the Gold Medal in the European Championships four times in the five year period of his junior and young rider time.
Marcus had a lot of exciting jump-offs, especially with his horse “Opium“. With the gelding he won more than 40 classes, among these triumphantly the "Preis der Nationen" (Nations Cup) as well as the Grand Prix in Warsaw. Marcus achieved his first adult international show successes with the horses “Costa”, “Antares” and the above mentioned “Opium”.
“For Pleasure” was a phenomenon in equestrian world and had give me a extremely confidence.
With the arrival of “For Pleasure” at the Ehning’s barn close to Christmas in 1998, the real success story started. “For Pleasure’s” previous career with rider Lars Nieberg is surely still in every bodies memory. His enormous jumping talent, vibrant presence and wonderful character made the Hanovarian stallion an extraordinary horse.
“In 1999 I rode the first champion¬ship with For Pleasure, the EC in Hickstead. We won team gold straight away and an in¬dividual fifth place. He gave me the feeling that a real Grand Prix is easy to jump. That gives you a lot of con¬fidence. For Pleasure was a phenom¬enon. You need a horse like that to make a career. Because of the confidence he gives you, you start riding with more confidence in general. Oh, it makes such a difference when you know that your horse can do it”.
“For Pleasure” died in 18 Feb 2011. He was a breeding stallion and has produced successful offspring competing at the Grand Prix level.
A good management is a key to the growth of the sport.
"My family has supported me my entire life and made it possible for me to start riding. As a pony rider I was trained by Lutz Merkel and as a junior and young rider I was trained by Fritz Ligges. Recently it is Henk Nooren (Nooren was a part of Holland’s show jumping team for several years, and has medals from both European and World Championships and now he is a popular trainer) that I train with; he's one of the most sought after trainers in Europe.
“I get help from Henk Nooren. When I started to train with him he came with me a little more often than now as it was important that he got to know the horses and my mentality. Henk didn’t want to change my riding, but things around me and the horses. We speak a lot together, and Henk has many good ideas. We have a good understanding,” Marcus smiles. “The whole thing with this sport is management; it’s the key.”
He continues: “My father is still the boss. He mainly concentrates on the young horses. When I am at a show, I also stay in contact with the clients. It is not just starting that I do there. My brother Johannes is also starting in competi¬tions. His style differs from mine and he concentrates more on the trade. A well-considered choice, because he does not have the ambition to travel to shows every week, it works out just fine; everyone is doing his own thing”.
Speaking of his horses, he used to ride the legendary stallion Sandro Boy and now he rides his daughter. He says about their different and similar, “They are very similar actually. Both Sandro Boy and Sabrina are beautiful, sensitive and very careful horses. I started riding Sandro Boy only when he was already 10 and he had to quickly moves up to jump the big classes. We started with Sabrina much earlier and after my brother Johannes showed her in the classes for young horses, I started riding and showing her as a 7 year old."
About Noltes Küchengirl he says, "Küche is a lot of scope, she is a big mare who is able to jump the biggest and most complicated classes there are... And win! Her natural ability to jump is very powerful."
About Plot Blue, “He is very energetic, alert and so eager to start working to the extent that as soon as his bridle is on his head he starts walking."
Marcus Ehning, German Meredith, Brazilian Rodrigo and Austrian Hugo Simon are the only riders who won the World Cup Final three times, but even more special is that Marcus did it each time on a different horse. He says, "Each time was different actually and special in its very own way. The third time, however, with Plot I was lucky and won after Pius and Ludger had unfortunate faults in the last round." Ehning explains. “To be good you need to be consistent in your work, but at the same time think you can do better.”
Besides the top horses, Marcus also trains a set of promising young horses. Up to 10 horses are trained by him on a daily basis. That is notable, he often comes to competitions by his trained horses, because he understands this horse better and he can match to him easily.
He had fond memories of many of his former horses and enjoys his current horses very much. The horse that started his international career in earnest was For Pleasure; he will always have a special place in my heart.
Marcus Ehning has been described as the "Lionel Messi" of the show jumping world.

Many people has described Marcus Ehning as the “Lionel Messi” of the show jumping world with an inexhaustible knack for style, position, control & exceptional skill achieving what is great and beyond. Looking closely, his head is cool, adjusted and deadly accurate with his movement and position in the saddle, feasting a lot of envious eyes on his miles of style & unrivalled perfection and we should admit this riding genius is alone seductive in show jumping competitions.
How did this man manage to acquire such harmony in his riding?
We do not know, but all we know is that the German icon is done some great things in the past, and will surely remain a refined artist with bags of scope to continue to succeed and impress for decades to come.

This german rider gentleman is a horseback seductive showman for viewer.
Now Marcus is a big name in equestrian world, but with fame and glory in career, he is still humble and says, “After winning the Gold at the Sydney Olympics, I had more fame and there was a lot of publicity. But I have always been realistic, though. Even when I was young we did not celebrate the wins exuberantly or were too disappointed with bad rounds."
Unlike most riders who have one or two top horses, he has six and maybe even seven of those. He tells that how he decides which horses go to which shows. "I make a general plan of which horse will go to which show that is coming up in the next 1-2 months. It depends on how many horses I can bring to the show, what the classes are, what the conditions are at the shows, like the size of the ring/warm-up ring or even if the horses have to get there by plane or just a truck ride. Closer to the show I will then make adjustments if necessary."
"My hope is for every young horse that I ride to make it to the top level. Every horse develops at a different speed; it is not always easy to predict which horse will get there. The most promising of my upcoming horses would definitely be Cornado NRW who is by Marco's horse Cornet Obolensky."
“As a young rider I had a few ponies that were not fast at all. In those classes I did not win a lot. But they always gave a reward, a stable plaque or point for riding on style. That was the only way for me then to get into the prizes. That is why I purposefully gave it a lot of attention. Sometimes a disadvantage can be turned into an advantage. And in my younger days, like many other youngsters, I did many apprenticeships in Warendorf where they pay a lot of attention to basic training”.
He recommends, “Dressage training that is where it all starts for a show jumping rider. It is also a kind of attitude. But everyone has a different attitude about the best style”.
He emphasizes the importance of sponsorship and owner in riding and says, “I need sponsors and owners. I cannot afford to buy a Grand Prix horse. They are impossibly dear and it is economically irresponsible, for an expensive horse rarely earns his own oats. You can just about cover the costs of a competition season with the winnings that is all”.
In many countries, riders complain about the lack of sponsors and owners. Is this different in a horse country such as Germany?
“It is not any easier in Germany than anywhere else. This is a myth. I now have the Noltes as a sponsor and that is because they are horse people themselves. Look at the riders in the top ten. How many of them have a full sponsor? Owners, yes, but sponsors are rare. And it is getting more difficult to persuade owners to keep good horses for the sport. Look at the auction results in Germany. More than half of the bet¬ter horses are sold abroad. Breeding stallions are help in this sport, because they can earn money”.
Marcus says about the difference of breeding stallion and a sport stallion and its importance for himself and thinks for all my owners the sport is more important. We always make clear ar-rangements on this issue. Take Vul¬kano, we reserve him three months for breeding. That is when he pro¬duces sperm and after that period he goes back into the sport. Never com¬bine breeding and the sport. I have nine stallions in my stables and they all get a few months a year to perform their stud duties. He likes all stallions in his stables, but Sandro Boy is the most popular as a stal¬lion. I get out of that by saying that breeders should first look at their mare and that they should use their best mares for stallions.
My success is result of my different way of my horse training.

French riders typically ride French horses, For Pleasure as a French horse ridden by a German, would that be a successful match?
Marcus Ehning thinks it is more a question of a difference in training than of breed or origin. “Our way of train¬ing is different. We build up slowly and only take the next step when the previous has been perfect. We do not often finish up front in young horse competitions, but at a later age we do, I hope. When you have a horse, you have to know what your target is”. I want to score at an international level and that takes time. I have no¬ticed, though, looking at the starting lists, that horses are started earlier every year, because they are made ready at an earlier age.
You should never jump faster than your horse can handle. He has to be able to process it, after all, and when you push him too far, he may lose it. I teach them to follow me and I have to be able to feel what their maxi¬mum speed is. You should never lose them, you see”.
You always have to know precisely how you are going to jump a course or a jump-off. After walking the course, you have some idea at the back of your mind, a kind of ideal scenario. But at the same time I work out several alternatives, as a reserve. Flexibility is what you need. If you are not one of the first riders to go into the ring, it helps when you can compare your vision with what the horses do that go be¬fore. But honestly, it does not always go as planned.
Marcus has his riding diplomacy for several owners. He says, “I am working with a whole team, in which each individual is equally important. I am not only riding for the owner, but for the whole team and the interest of the horse comes first. Of course, you accommodate the owner as much as possible, but I am the one who knows what is best for the horse. I have the final deci-sion and the final responsibility, not the owner”.
Marcus often doesn’t work with contracts, he goes by gut feeling. The entire picture should be right and every¬one has to be pleased, the owners, the grooms, the other employees at home. You cannot force that with a contract. You do not solve prob¬lems with a piece of paper. The peo¬ple concerned should form a close team. After Mannheim I was glad that I could fall back on my team, which remained full of confidence. To come home to a safe place is very important. And when an owner is no longer satisfied, a contract will not remedy that.
My best memory is Olympic gold medal.
He says, my best memory is Sydney, without any doubt. Six weeks of Australia and a gold medal, and all that so early in my international career. You know, the Olympics cannot be compared with anything else. Not even with ECs and WCs. Peo¬ple who have nothing to do with-out sport will always remember the gold medal. Gold at the Games is really exceptional, in all respects.
